Types & Variants of Cement & their Uses

Among the extensive list of materials required during the construction process, cement potentially holds the most noteworthy position, and its significance and use, accordingly, have only increased in recent years. This is predominantly on account of its binding characteristics that play an integral role in holding the structure together for the years and decades to come. From its ability to set effectively and swiftly to its applicability in delivering complex designs and structures, cement covers all the bases. It variants, based on their composition and production methodologies, may be used to achieve a multitude of aesthetic and design requirements. As a result, choosing the right variant is essential not only to ensure cost-effective and timely completion of the construction process, but to ensure achievement of the desired result as well. To facilitate better understanding and informed decision-making, the commonly available and used variants of cement, are explained below.

Ordinary Portland Cement

Ordinary Portland Cement is the most commonly chosen and used variant of cement, particularly in Pakistan. Its fast-setting capability, in comparison to other variants of cement, makes it an ideal choice for all construction and development projects, especially when budgets and timelines are to strictly be adhered to. The proportion in which its ingredients are mixed, i.e. two parts of calcareous material with one part of argillaceous material, followed by its crushing in ball-mills in a dry or a wet state, equip it with exceptional strength. The dry powder is extracted after the crushing, and is further scorched in an oven at temperatures ranging from 1400 to 1500 °C. The residue obtained from the furnace is first cooled, and then taken back to ball-marks for the addition of gypsum as per the product class of the sub-variant. On account of its similitude in both colour and quality to that of Portland Stone, the variant has come to be known as Ordinary Portland Cement. In terms of its use, Ordinary Portland Cement is chosen for all standardised construction, i.e. for all circumstances where a solid structure is to be constructed under standard soil conditions. It is particularly popular vis-a-vis brickwork for its insulation against cracks, hazardous substance attacks and shrinkage, and its characteristically shorter setting time significantly reduces curing costs.

Sulphate Resistant Cement

Sulphate Resistant Cement, as the name suggests, prevents the development of sulphate salts wheresoever it has been used in the construction of a structure. Its production through specifically chosen cement residue, crushed slag and gypsum ensures profoundly better resistance to sulphate and considerably improved heat discharge. Accordingly, the considerably diminished likelihood and presence of sulphate salts eliminates potential sulphate attacks on the structure, mitigates the erosion of steel, and provides protection against chloride particles, thereby enhancing the life and strength of the structure in question. This variant, in particular, is commonly used in environments and on locations, such as coastal areas, that exhibit a significant presence of sulphate. With its high compressive power and low hydration heat, it additionally enhances the durability and performance of concrete, especially with respect to chimneys, foundations, and sewerage treatment plants.

White Cement

While White Cement shares some characteristics with Ordinary Portland Cement, its colour and fineness are significantly different and unique. Its colour is primarily determined by the composition of ingredients and the processes used in its production, wherein notably higher temperatures are used for its burning. Accordingly, along with exhibiting higher energy-utilisation, the price of White Cement is substantively higher than the prices of both Ordinary Portland Cement and Sulphate Resistant Cement. As a result of its price tag, its use is largely restricted to the construction of decorative ornaments, such as sculptures, and for external and internal beautification and structural enhancement. Based on the specific concoction of cement, colours and shades prepared on-site, White Cement may be used to produce spotless and splendid tones. In consequence, an impressive assortment of looks can be accomplished with an aesthetically-sound selection of colour tones.

Based on the distinct characteristics and features of each variant, a more diligent decision may be taken vis-a-vis one's specific requirements. However, owing to the need for cautiousness on account of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to boast of a convenient construction experience, construction material should simply be purchased online.
